General Announcements
As an 8th grader, you are eligible to participate in Pep Band, audition for Jazz Band, audition to go on the trip, and attend the MPA Festival. You also are encouraged to work toward auditioning for All-County and All-District Band.
(**Some of these activities are still suspended this year, but if we are able to do them, I want you to be aware of what your opportunities are in this class.**)
The book you will need for 8th grade is Accent on Achievement: Book 3.
Percussionists: Please make sure you purchase the "Combined Percussion" book NOT the "auxiliary percussion" book.
***Note - We will begin the year reviewing Standard of Excellence Book 2 - You should have this book from last year.
You will need a 1" Binder for daily use in class.
In class warm-up materials will be provided: Warm Up Fundamentals, Foundations Pages, and Warm Ups and Beyond will be used sequentially to reinforce basic musicality.
Dress Code for Concerts:
Concert attire is All Black. (And black means black. Not grey. No pinstripes, patterns or bling, etc)
Outfit 1: Black dress slacks (no leggings, yoga pants or jeans), Solid Black 3/4 length or Long Sleeved Shirt (no bling, stripes, patterns, etc. Black closed toe dress shoes (no tennis shoes)
Outfit 2: Black dress slacks (no jeans), Solid Black, long sleeved dress shirt, tie, Black dress shoes (no tennis shoes)
Focused concepts for 8th grade:
Scales and Chorales
Compound Meter - 9/8, 12/8, 7/8
16th note combinations and syncopated rhythms
Tuners should be used daily to support intonation skills as well as listening across the band and learning to make quick adjustments when things sound "wrong."
Three goals:
1. Focus on intonation skills - long tones and sustained breath support in both melodic and harmonic intervals.
2. Write in the Counting; Clap and Count lines of increasing rhythmic challenge
3. Use appropriate musical vocabulary in class discussions and submitted work
