General Information
6th grade is the only time Beginning Band is offered at Oberlin Magnet MS. If a child shows interest in learning a musical instrument, now is the time to start.
NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE is needed on any musical instrument to be successful in beginning band.
6th Graders will have the option to start on the following instruments:
Flute
Clarinet
Alto Sax - by audition only
Trumpet
Trombone
Percussion - by audition only
The book 6th Graders need for class this year is
Essential Elements for Band: Book 1 (for their specific instrument)
You will need a 1" Binder for daily use in class.
Three goals the 6th graders will be working toward:
1. Write in the Counting for AND Clap and Count a rhythm line including all note values accurately (whole, half, quarter, eighth)
2. Proficiency on the Concert Bb, Eb, F, Ab, C Major Scales and Chromatic Scale
3. Build and use appropriate vocabulary when discussing and describing musical concepts.
6th Graders will perform in 3 Concerts during the school year. Attendance is taken and expected at all concerts.
Dress Code for Concerts:
Concert attire is All Black. (And black means black. Not grey. No pinstripes, patterns or bling, etc)
Outfit 1: Black dress slacks (no leggings, yoga pants or jeans), Solid Black 3/4 length or Long Sleeved Shirt (no bling, stripes, patterns, etc. Black closed toe dress shoes (no tennis shoes)
Outfit 2: Black dress slacks (no jeans), Solid Black, long sleeved dress shirt, tie, Black dress shoes (no tennis shoes)
